Comic Reviews for Week of July 2nd

It's comic time again so sit back and enjoy talking raccoons, swamp men, and weird purple dragons.

Original sin #05
5/5
Nick Fury’s long kept secrets are finally revealed. This is great, nothing like having everything you thought you knew just turned sideways.   I appreciated that they didn’t just erase years of comic canon by saying something stupid like “there’s never been a Nick Fury; he’s always been an LMD”.   The whole issue is just back-story, but what a back-story! Original sin has certainly learned how to make exposition interesting again.

Guardians Of The Galaxy: Most Wanted #01
2/4
Rocket and Groot try and collect a bounty only to find they have one on their own heads. I read this thinking it would be another GOG spin off comic only to find that it’s all movie stuff. The weird part is that it doesn’t say it’s a movie tie in which just confuses me.  The story is pretty straight forward and bland and while rocket does do some funny things I would still say that it’s a very easy skip.

Rocket Raccoon #01
4/5
Rocket Raccoon receives a bounty on his head and finds out that there may be another of his kind wandering around.  This was a lot better than I was expecting, rocket was on fire and matches closer to the personality I’ve come to know and love. I was a little frustrated by the fact that a lot of important stuff happened off panel yet I feel like I should have seen all that unfolding in a pervious issue.

Punisher #08
4/5
Punisher and some Marines team up to escape Crossbones.   A fine issue, but mostly comprised of a lot of military jargon and tactics.  The ending was a nice touch showing the loyalty of men in arms.

Thor God of Thunder #24
5/5
Asgardian’s say goodbye to bronxton and Thor decides to stay on earth.   Very nice wrap up to Asgard’s time on earth and there are some excellent moments of heroism from Thor that don’t involve him hitting anything.  One question I have to ask though is when the heck did Jane Foster get cancer? And what stupidly implausible reason could she possibly have for not wanting Thor to try and help her with Asgaridian magic.

Miles Morals Ultimate: Spider-Man #03
5/5
The Green Goblin is still alive and has some unfinished business.  Fantastic issue really captures the dread of GG back from the dead and poor miles who’s barely faced anything so horrifying on his own. I still am a little upset that Goblin is back in the first place but whatever I’ll roll with it .

Captain America #22
4/5
Arnim Zola returns as Rogers deals with the fact that he no longer posses the super soldier serum.  Fun, interesting, exciting but still just the opening of the play it hasten gotten into the meat of the new story yet.

Figment #02
2/5
Figment and our hero journey into a strange new world.  This continues to be weird. I don’t know if this is good or bad or something in between mainly because I’m still trying to figure out who the audience for the comic is, I want to assume children but the art style and the way it writes sometimes makes me second guess that hypothesis.

Action comics #33
1/5
Steel searches for the Were Doomsday-Superman while superman trys to save a planet from destruction while trying to control his inner demons.   Wow, D.C sure does like it’s exposition,  Pages and pages of text boxes telling us every little unimportant detail about these characters who were supposed to understand already. The art is awful and very unimaginative in design it’s really a shame since D.C used to be such a pioneer in imagination. Ultimately the issue is dull and leaves much to be desired.

Green Lantern #33
3/5
Hal Jordan launches his final assault on the Durlans to prevent them from becoming gods.  Was a lot of fun and enjoyed seeing the tables turn on the Durlans and the Corps come out on top.  Unfortunately the writing and art are still only just ok and the final tease at the end of the issue about the fight not being over, when they clearly won, just made me roll my eyes.

Green Arrow #33
2/4
Green Arrow rushes to save diggle from the clutches of a madman.  …I have no idea what’s even going on in here, and I read the last issue. So much continuity and side stories that I’m rather confused by what the actual plot is.

Swamp thing #33
5/5

Swamp thing is taxed by multiple threats to the green as the Wolf’s plan unfolds.   Great issue loved seeing swamp thing completely crush a bunch of demons and upset the Wolf’s plan. Crazy stuff in this issue, kind of feel bad for swamp thing, the guy just can’t seem to get a breather.
